Puako Beach Wedding on the Big Island

back

This beachfront boho Big Island elopement was one of the dreamiest days I’ve been a part of, from their stunning decor brimming with bohemian-inspired details, to their ability to go with the flow (literally – it rained almost the whole day), all the literal RAINBOW that showed up at sunset.

A rainy spring day on the Big Island

The Hamakua Coast isn’t known for rain – but whew did it rain! After the most beautiful weather the Friday before their wedding, we woke up to a Saturday forecast for rain, rain, rain – and rainnnn it did. The day started with overcast, gloomy skies and really committed to that for the rest of the day, lol – but as they say in showbiz, the show must go on!

Luckily, the skies opened up moments before the ceremony was set to start and instead of a wet wedding, we were absolutely blessed with the most stunning golden hour and rainbow!

Beachside Luxury Boho Florals

I had to add a whole new section just to talk about their boho elopement decor because whew was it *chef’s kiss* 🤌🏼 You know I love me some color in my life, but the vibes that bohemian decor brings are simply delicious in an entirely different way. Tropical, colorful, & bright decor is typically the norm for Hawaii weddings, but when you keep your decor a little more neutral it really allows the stunning landscapes around you to shine on their own. L+B did just that, opting for a neutral color palette filled with beiges, muted greens, pale pinks, & plenty of delish shades of orange, which allowed the greenery of the palm trees swaying above & the blue waves hitting the shore to come throughhh!

Let’s just take a brief minute to marvel at the stunning floral ceremony arch that Hakus By Ki created – who needs a symmetrical arch when you can have a glorious asymmetric floral arch right on the water? Brimming with fluffy pampas grass, dried branches/leaves, and dusty pink roses, these arrangements were the perfect balance of whimsy and romance without drowning out the natural beauty of the Hamakua Coastline in Puako.

Aside from the magical ceremony centerpiece, every little detail of this day was so clearly intentional and well-thought-out. From the candles everywhere to the boho vases & vintage glassware to the adorable woven baskets for the bridesmaids, I couldn’t take ENOUGH photos of it all. I’ll let the pics speak for themselves below ✨

The snazziest boho-glam Hawaii elopement outfits

As if their decor didn’t bring enough boho beauty to the day, the outfits stole the show. The bride chose a fairly minimalistic strapless gown with spicy lil’ back cutouts, a classic sweetheart neckline, and a beautiful train that just dropped onto the floor. But don’t be fooled – while this dress was so beautifully simple, she added her own bits of boho flair with a fluffy veil adorned with glistening pearls, a gorgeous gold pearl necklace + matching earrings, and a floral hairpiece. My GOODNESS did she look like a damn queen – oh, and did I mention the dress featured a lovely leg slit? My personal favorite way to spice up any wedding dress 🔥

The groom opted for a clean cut, all-beige monochrom suite and tie with a slicked back man bun. As for their footwear choices? Both bride and groom opted to be barefoot and stood on a woven lauhala mat in the sand as their said their vows. Magicallll.

A romantic sunset wedding ceremony on Puako beach

You probably wouldn’t guess it from these photos but yes, it was still raining during their ceremony after raining alllll day! They took it like champs and powered through for a beautiful ceremony on the beach just before sunset, as the sun started peeking through the clouds just a tad toward the end for their first kiss as a married couple. Their guests watched as they participated in a few special rituals, read their vows, and finally tied the knot in front of the most stunning landscape you could ask for!

A Hawaiian sunset from the heavens for some Big Island beach elopement portraits

After wrapping up the ceremony, by some magic and hardcore manifesting, the clouds held and we got blessed with a Hawaiian sunset from the heavens, complete with golden light so freakin thick you could eat it with a spoon. We were lucky enough to get a damn rainbow, delicious golden light dripping from the skies, and the most peaceful blue hour by the water – needless to say, it was the perfect way to enjoy the last little bit of daylight before heading into the party portion of the day.

A tropical backyard reception under the stars

The love didn’t stop when the daylight did – everybody moved into the grassy area of the backyard to celebrate under strings of fairy lights, complete with delicious cupcakes (topped with little flowers), chocolate-covered strawberries, fresh coconuts to sip from, and traditional leis everywhere you looked. They danced the night away and celebrated with their guests under the stars, enjoying every little bit of love that was going around – a kickass way to end a kickass day.
